What to Prepare and Stock Up for A Long-term Quarantine in China?
Recently, as Shanghai reported a record number of symptomatic COVID-19 cases, other areas across China tightened controls as the country kept up its "dynamic clearance" approach that aims to stamp out the highly transmissible Omicron variant.
Many residents expressed fear about being forced into centralized quarantine, where facilities are overloaded. For long-term home quarantine, although many Chinese households have kept food stocks since the winter, the government warnings and fears about the omicron variant prompted shopping sprees.
The speed of its spread and the difficulties in detecting mild cases mean that eliminating the omicron variant domestically now seems extremely difficult. In case of suddenly receiving centralized quarantine or long-term home quarantine notifications, what to pack or prepare in advance?

What to Pack for Centralized Quarantine?
Most mild or so-called asymptomatic COVID-19 cases are quarantined in a Fangcang shelter hospital, which is kind of a large container dormitory equipped with basic life facilities and necessary conditions for medical treatment. These essential items can be packed in an "emergency quarantine kit":
Basic Items | ID cards, masks, mobile phones and chargers |
Household Goods | Toothbrush, toothpaste, facial cleanser, shampoo, shower gel, toilet paper, period products, razors, nail clippers, ear plugs and eye masks |
Clothes | Warm jackets, comfortable pajamas, underwear, socks |
Snacks | Biscuits, milk, canned food (meal replacement products) |
Commonly Used Drugs | Band-Aid, painkillers, constipation drugs and diarrhea drugs |
Long-term Medication (for those who have underlying diseases) | Sufficient medication for a period of at least 2 weeks |
Entertainments | Books, tablets and game machine |
What to Prepare for Long-term Home Quarantine?
If there is a confirmed case in your community, you will receive a notification of home quarantine for 7 to 14 days or longer. In a moment of desperation, you may not know what you should buy and how much you need to buy. Here is a checklist for your information:
Essential Foods | Rice, noodles, eggs, frozen meat, cooking oil, frozen vegetables, grains and beans, basic seasonings (salt, vinegar, sugar, onion, ginger, garlic and chili pepper), milk and water |
Instant Foods | Compound seasonings (hotpot base, curry powder, powder soup), Frozen foods (dumplings, steamed buns, pancakes), processed meat (sausage, spam), instant noodles, instant cereals |
Snacks | Chips, candies, jelly, beverages, coffee and tea |
Household Goods | Toothbrush, toothpaste, facial cleanser, shampoo, shower gel, toilet paper, period products, laundry detergent, household disinfectant, alcohol wipes, children's supplies (diapers, milk powder), pet supplies (pet food, cat litter, common drugs) |
Commonly Used Drugs | Band-Aids, painkillers, constipation drugs and diarrhea drugs, anti-allergic medicines, thermometers and medicines you often take. |
