Job Description

THE ROLE                        

The principal will be employed by *  and line-managed directly through the School Board and with close collaboration with the Principal of *

Principal Assistant, an Office Manager and a Head of Marketing and Admissions
These colleagues form the school’s SLT.


This core Senior Leadership Team (SLT) will be the driving force for preparing the school for opening in Feb 2022.  Together, the team will create and implement the School Development Plan.


Strategic Direction and Development of the School

·       To work with members of the SLT to develop and implement the School Development Plan according to the educational principles defined through the Principal of * .


·       To consult fully and consistently with the Principal of *  regarding the synergistic partnership and joint working of the two schools, and actively ensure that *is compliant with the * approach to learning


·       To meet the agreed staff and student recruitment targets


·       To develop, with the SLT, a positive school ethos and provide educational vision and direction to secure effective teaching, successful learning and academic achievement and personal development of students


·       To articulate and implement the aims and objectives of the School, captured in the School Development Plan, taking into account the individual needs of each student


·       To monitor, evaluate and review the effectiveness of school policies in the light of the School Development Plan


·       To promote and safeguard the welfare, health and safety of students and staff and that appropriate policies and procedures are put in place to meet this objective


·       To work with SLT to ensure a consistent and efficient approach to resource planning


·       To maintain effective and professional relationships with other educational establishments and professional bodies.


Promoting and Marketing the School

·       To work with the Head of Marketing and Admissions to market the School and its unique offer to China 

·       To develop the Principal’s profile within the wider community

·       To meet with prospective customers to drive recruitment

Human Resources

·       The Principal:

o   manages the academic, pastoral and management teams;

o   selects, appoints, deploys, appraises and manages members of academic, 
pastoral and management staff.

Leading Learning and Teaching

·       The Principal:

o   interviews and selects students for admission in accordance with the school’s 
selection policy

o   determines, organises and implements a curriculum best able to meet the needs of   each student;

o   promotes and develops with relevant staff Chinese roots and global understanding;

o   actively pursues curriculum integration between the English and Chinese National Curricula;

o   designs, oversees and monitors the provision for and uptake of co­curricular and extracurricular activities;

o   oversees the monitoring of effective learning and teaching throughout
 the school and evaluates achievement in all academic areas and personal

o   designs, creates and maintains an ethos of positive discipline, high standards 
and good behaviour in which students’ individual needs are met

o   creates, maintains and monitors an appropriate system of pastoral care to 
ensure each student is supported in such a way as to achieve their full potential.

Professional Development and Managing the School

·       The Principal:

o   defines the staffing structure needed to implement the school’s academic and 
pastoral aims

o   recruits and deploys high quality teachers and support staff as required;

o   liaises with the Finance Director on budgeting and accounting;

o   ensures a safe, productive, disciplined and professional environment;

o   implements training and professional development programmes for all staff;

o   implements an effective appraisal system for all staff;

o   promotes an internal organisation that permits effective communication;

o   projects, promotes and implements the school’s values of integrity, 
accountability and aspiration for excellence

o   produces, submits for approval, and implements improvement plans and 
policies for the development of the School and its facilities;

o   builds and maintains organisational structures and systems which delegate 
responsibilities to enable the school to run efficiently and effectively on a 
day-to-day basis

o   makes every effort to remain within budgetary parameters.

Relations with Parents

·       The Principal:

o   maintains open and transparent relations with parents, ensuring they receive 
regular communication regarding their child and the school

o   ensures an environment of interaction with parents through Parent 
Consultations, key school events and electronic communication.


Qualifications and Knowledge

·       Good degree or equivalent qualification

·       Qualified teacher status

·       Evidence of Continuing Professional Development

·       Thorough understanding of current educational and legal issues

·       Thorough understanding of current best practice in education both in the UK 
and in China.


Skills and Experience

·       Successful leadership at senior level

·       Experience of successful delivery against an agreed strategic plan

·       Knowledge and understanding of international education systems and markets

·       Successful management of change

·       Experience in effective performance management

·       Sound knowledge of effective financial management and planning

·       High level of IT literacy

·       Ability to analyse data, develop strategic plans, set targets and monitor progress

·       Awareness of the role of PR and marketing

·       Understanding of UK and Chinese teaching and learning methods

·       Understanding of the characteristics of an effective learning environment

·       Understanding of local and national trends affecting schools within China

·       Understanding of Child Protection Procedures, and a commitment to promoting and safeguarding the future of children.



The salary range will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. This may include a KPI component.



The school will provide suitable furnished accommodation or there will be an additional accommodation allowance and the school offers assistance to locate a suitable flat.


Medical cover    

Private medical cover for the principal will be provided for them and their spouse.
