1. Arrivals of international students to the US dropped almost a fifth

International visitors arriving to the U.S. on student visas declined 19% in August compared with the same month in 2024, according to the preliminary data released by the National Travel and Tourism Office.
From a regional perspective, the number of students from India has decreased by 45%, from Africa by 33%, and from China by approximately 12%. This has directly impacted international enrollment, financial revenue, and campus diversity in higher education institutions.

8. University of Sydney knocked back for extra international student spots

Federal Education Minister Jason Clare on Tuesday announced an extra 17,500 international enrolments for the public universities next year, bringing the nationwide total to 162,876.
The University of Sydney retains the highest number of international spots – 11,900 – but was the only institute knocked back from getting a larger slice. The university’s lack of new student accommodation was given as a key reason.

10. World University Rankings 2026: results announced

The performance of Asia’s top universities has stalled for the first time in 14 years in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, while the US continues to decline even before the effects of the Trump administration’s attacks on higher education show up in the data.
While there are widespread strong results across many parts of Asia in the THE World University Rankings 2026 – which is topped by the UK’s University of Oxford for a record 10th consecutive year – the region’s leading universities are stagnant. Tsinghua University has stalled at 12th place for the third year in a row, Peking University has moved up just one place during that time and is now 13th for the second consecutive year, and the National University of Singapore (NUS) has also failed to improve on last year’s 17th position. The number of Chinese universities in the top 200 is also steady, at 13 universities for the third year in a row.

In September 2025, China’s Ministry of Education approved 46 new transnational education (TNE) partnerships, comprising 16 joint institutes and 30 collaborative programmes with partner countries including the UK, Germany, France and Malaysia. China aims to expand its TNE enrolments from 800,000 to eight million.

Oct. 16, 2025. More than 140 students from around the world are systematically learning traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory at the School of Humanities and International Education Exchange at Anhui University of Chinese Medicine.
