School Location
The 36 new international schools in 2022 are distributed in 10 provinces (and cities) including Beijing, Fujian, Guangdong, Heilongjiang, Hubei, Jiangsu, Shandong, Shanghai, Sichuan and Zhejiang.
Due to the high economy level and local policy support, Guangdong becomes the region with the largest number of new international schools in four consecutive years. A total of 14 new institutions were added in Guangdong in 2022, accounting for 38.9% of the total.
In addition, the number of new international schools in Beijing, Jiangsu, Sichuan and Zhejiang is also rapidly increasing. It is worth noting that, 3 newly established schools in Beijing are located in areas where international educations are relatively weak. With the booming economy, Jiangsu, Sichuan and Zhejiang have also attracted many highly talented professionals and expatriates.
Industry
Among 36 new schools, private schools are still the subject that account for 69.5%; There are 8 schools for foreign nationals, accounting for 22.2%; Number of public schools or international departments are relatively few that only account for 8.3%.
Compared with the statistics of September 2021, the proportion of private international schools has decreased by nearly 17%; The decline is subject to the regulations issued last year that has tightened the process of approving and establishing new private schools.
The number of schools for foreign nationals has increased rapidly as they are backed by the policies. For example, Beijing eased the restrictions on the organizers of schools for foreign nationals in December last year, allowing social organizations and individuals to run schools for the first time; Shenzhen and Chongqing have also relaxed the same restrictions in 2022.
Student Age
The K-12 education mode is widely accepted among all new international schools, accounting for 52.8%. In terms of specific phase of studying, there are 34 schools offer high school education, 27 schools offer compulsory education, and 19 schools offer pre-school education. As a result, high school education becomes a popular choice in 2022.
Curriculum
As a great number of British-brand schools settle in, the British curriculum A-level becomes the mainstream in high school stage, with a total of 14 schools offering it. Besides, there are 9 schools offering IBDP courses and 8 schools offering AP courses. Some international schools, such as Mountain Kingston Bilingual School Suzhou, provide both international courses and Chinese college entrance examination courses for students. In the compulsory education stage, private international schools mostly focus on integrated courses and national courses.
It's worth mentioning that, some schools also provide courses for special groups. For example, Minxin School Guangzhou Nansha offers courses that are based on the mainland and Hong Kong curriculum standards; Affiliated School of JNU for Hong Kong & Macau Students also provides Hong Kong DSE courses.
Conclusion
After years of rapid growth, private international schools have changed to standardized and high-quality development. The governments have issued a number of new policies to regulate the management of private schools that slowed down the development of private education to a certain extent.
For international education, national and regional norms of education development bring new opportunities. In 2021 and 2022, several policies are introduced to encourage and promote the development of international education. For example, Guangzhou clearly stated in the "14th Five Year Plan" to open up of the education to the outside world. Every year, 15 to 20 ordinary schools will be identified as the beacon schools of international education.
In addition, Guangdong, Hangzhou, Hainan and Beijing have attached importance to the development of international high school, and it may become a major direction for the development of international schools everywhere in the future. At the same time, international schools will expand to the areas where the educational resources are weak or insufficient.
