Job Description

Job Title: Primary School Strings Teacher
Our School:
Founded in 1996, the Shanghai Singapore International School aims to develop each student
into a responsible global citizen, with a strong sense of character preparing them for success in
any life or career path they may choose. Our philosophy, vision, and mission is to educate
students in an environment that will not only equip them with a high level of content skills and
information, but also help them to learn the behaviors associated with global citizenry and the
concept of being humanitarians and caring individuals.
Purpose:
The successful candidate will provide classroom strings (violin and cello) instruction to G1
through G6 students as well as develop and maintain a comprehensive and appropriate strings
curriculum. The candidate will also lead a variety of ensembles and organize informal and
formal performances together with the duties expected of a teacher in the school as part of the
faculty team.
At SSIS in Grade 3 students can join general music or the strings programme where they
choose violin or cello. In grades 3 and 4 there are separate classes for either instrument with
specialist teachers. In grades 5 and 6 they are taught together with classes divided into upper
and lower sections. Class sizes vary from 4 to 12 students. The programme continues into
Grades 7 and 8.

Reports to Primary Aesthetics Head of Department, Director of Aesthetics and Primary School
Principal
Key Accountabilities:
1. Teaching and Learning
A desire to develop a life-long love and appreciation for music in primary students
To instruct young musicians in a classroom setting, establishing the fundamentals of
their instrument and music
To develop and maintain an engaging and practical curriculum; incorporating theory,
history and practice
Maintain a high standard of student achievement
Assess student progress through practical assessments
Work collaboratively with the whole school aesthetics faculty
Complete term reports on student achievement 
Establish and maintain a purposeful and positive learning atmosphere, with high
expectations of all
2. Co-Curricular
Organising internal and external performances, competitions and similar events
Conduct, lead, assist and accompany a wide and varied range of music ensembles at
lunch time and after school across the School
Work with and support the Primary Aesthetics Head of Department to maintain high
standards of music achievement in all areas of curriculum and co-curriculum
programmes
3. General Responsibilities
Accompany students on trips away from the School if required
Attend assemblies and similar school-wide events
Take responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young
people within the school.
Uphold and promote all aspects of the Child Protection and Safeguarding policies.
To act on aspects of pupil welfare and safeguarding raising any concerns by following
school protocol/procedures
Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Primary School Principal or K-12
Aesthetics Coordinator/Director


Requirements

Qualifications and experience required:
a) Demonstrated knowledge of current best practice in international pedagogy and innovation.
Successful teaching experience. Recent training and/or experience in the current
curriculum.
b) Experience as a Primary School Strings Teacher in international schools.
c) Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with
students, parents, teachers and others.
d) Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field. Valid teaching certificate.
e) Work experience with other cultures and nationalities within an international education
environment. Ability to differentiate instruction for all learners.
f) Proven ability to bring about and support change. A positive attitude. Willingness to
collaborate regularly with colleagues in a positive, constructive manner. Ability to participate
in and establish collaborative structures. Proven ability to develop successful academic
programs.
g) Willingness to moderate assignments at all levels to ensure collective understanding of
achievement. Willingness to reinforce our School Mission and I-4C values.
h) Ability to use learning data to explore and improve teaching and learning practices. Ability
to engage students in learning activities using a variety of current technologies and online
platforms.
i) Preferred experience: Strings curriculum development, proficiency in piano, ABRSM
